Elon Musk Deletes his Company’s Social Media Profiles in Wake of Cambridge Analytica Scandal

Elon Musk deletes his companies' social media profilesElon Musk very abruptly deleted the social media profiles for both Tesla and SpaceX this last Friday. The move did come as a surprise to Musk fans but since the whole Facebook/Cambridge Analytica scandal, Musk decided that is was best to delete the profiles all together to take stand against Facebook. Last week there was a huge outcry on social media to take a stand against Facebook. The hashtag #deletefacebook started to trend last week on Twitter and so far many have joined the movement to get rid of their Facebook pages. Musk decided to also join the movement by deleting both the SpaceX and Tesla Facebook pages. The SpaceX account had 3 million followers, and Tesla hd about 4 million.

This bold move came in the wake of the latest Facebook impropriety. It was discovered last week that the consulting firm, Cambridge Analytica, had wrongfully harvested personal data for over 50 million Facebook users.  The information wastes by the political consulting firm who was backing President Trump’s 2016 election campaign. The information that was collected was then used to developed a software program that profiled the users to predict voting patterns. Through these predictions, they created micro-targeted ads that were designed to influence US citizens’ voting decisions.

According to Techradar.com, Cambridge Analytica was able to gain access to the information through very underhanded means. According to the article, “Cambridge Analytica (CA) obtained voter data through a Facebook-linked app named ‘thisisyourdigitallife’. Through the app, CA member Aleksandr Kogan paid Facebook users in exchange for a detailed personality test, supposedly for academic research purposes.”

The #deletefacebook hashtag started with the cofounder of WhatsApp (that is also owned by Facebook). Brian Acton started the movement by tweeting, “It is time. #DeleteFacebook” and Musk responded with tweeting “What’s Facebook?”.

Another Twitter user called him out saying, “Delete SpaceX page on Facebook if you’re the man?” and in typical Musk fashion, he responded with, “I didn’t realize there was one. Will do.”

Soon another tweet followed asking if Musk was going to also delete the Tesla Facebook and Musk responded with another cheeky answer saying, “Definitely. Looks lame anyway.”

There has also been called for Musk to delete the Instagram accounts for both Tesla and SpaceX since Facebook owns Instagram but so far both those profiles are still up. Musk did acknowledge that Facebook’s negative influence is creeping in but for now he has not made another public statements about getting rid of the Instagram profiles. For those still wanting to keep up with the company, both companies still have their Twitter, Youtube and Flickr accounts.

As the enigmatic SpaceX and Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, has been known to make some pretty unpredictable moves, but he usually follows his gut on what is best for his companies and his gut is usually right. But according to Musk, he doesn’t even use Facebook anyways. In his last thoughts on the matter, he tweeted, “Instagram’s probably ok imo, so long as it stays fairly independent. I don’t use FB & never have, so don’t think I’m some kind of martyr or my companies are taking a huge blow. Also, we don’t advertise or pay for endorsements, so … don’t care.” and he then added, “We’ve never advertised with FB. None of my companies buy advertising or pay famous people to fake endorse. Product lives or dies on its own merits.”

Make Zuckerberg has since made a public apology and did the standard public apology tour but it took a few days before the news broke before the Facebook founder stepped forward to offer any explanation as to why this breach of trust even occurred in the first place. The fallout continues as sharp drop in share price erased close to $50 billion of the company’s market cap. Now Zuckerberg has been asked to testify before congress to address the “breach of trust” that occurred.

Elon-Musk opens up in a Rolling Stone Interview Elon Musk opened up like never before in his latest interview with Rolling Stone. The SpaceX and Tesla CEO sat down with the publication to discuss Musk’s latest ambitions and the future of his company and the future of the world. The ever ambitious inventor and entrepreneur opened up about his personal life that caught his fans by surprise. The billionaire is also so cool, calm and collected and this very personal side of him that came out in this interview showed a softer side of him.

The interview began by him explaining his frustrations over those who want him to fail. Musk was looking at short losses and explained to the Rolling Stone journalist how much it really bothers him that people are betting against him and his companies. “They’re jerks who want us to die,” Musk says. “They’re constantly trying to make up false rumors and amplify any negative rumors. It’s a really big incentive to lie and attack my integrity. It’s really awful. It’s…” the journalist then tried to fill in the gap by saying that it was unethical but Musk answered that it was actually hurtful. The interview then opened the door to showing a different side of Musk. It showed Musk as a man and not just the billionaire inventor looking to save the world.

Most interviews or editorials about Musk talk about his successes and his companies. The New York Times has referred to him as “arguably the most successful and important entrepreneur in the world”, a heavy title for any person but Musk wears it well. He has an ability to shake off his failures and see them as lessons learned rather than let them destroy him. He seems almost unshakeable and his sense of humor in the face of adversity is on of the reasons that he has become so successful.

People usually see him in this light and have built him up to almost myth-like status. He is many things, an engineer, an inventor, and a “technologist” as Musk refers to himself as. His own brother has described him as a brilliant strategist. “There’s a thing in chess where you can see 12 moves ahead if you’re a grandmaster, his brother Kimbal said. “And in any particular situation, Elon can see things 12 moves ahead.”

But this interview shed some light on Musk’s private life in a way that no interview had done before. And one point during the interview, the journalist tried to ask about the Model 3 launch when Musk asked if he could take a break because he needed to unload some stuff from his mind. When he got back,  Musk offered some information about his personal life to explain why he was struggling. “I just broke up with my girlfriend,” he says hesitantly. “I was really in love, and it hurt bad. Well, she broke up with me more than I broke up with her, I think.”

The Model 3 launch was the highlight of Tesla’s year. The much hyped, affordable electric car is still facing some production line issues but that hasn’t stopped the excitement around the car. Everyone was excited about this event and naturally the journalist wanted a post-mortem about the event but Musk told its something surprising.

Musk then explained that, “I’ve been in severe emotional pain for the last few weeks,” Musk elaborates. “Severe. It took every ounce of will to be able to do the Model 3 event and not look like the most depressed guy around. For most of that day, I was morbid. And then I had to psych myself up: drink a couple of Red Bulls, hang out with positive people and then, like, tell myself: ‘I have all these people depending on me. All right, do it!'”

The revelation was shocking based on the fact that Model 3 launch was a success and Musk appeared as he always did, he was outgoing, energetic, and engaging. It came as a surprise that he was emotionally struggling over the loss of his relationship with Amber Heard.

The interview was highly emotional and it exposed a side to Musk that has never been seen. Musk is a man of many talents and ambitions but it seems like the next big step for Musk is finding love.

The announced the news last week on their respective social medias and then released a joint statement to the press to clarify rumors that were circulating after the separation. It was probably the most mature breakup in the history of break ups.

Both Musk and Heard announced the split on social media before releasing the joint statement. It started with Musk commenting on a picture on Heard’s Instagram account with the following caption, “A few days after the news broke, Musk commented on his ex-girlfriends Instagram account, writing, “Btw, just to clear up some of the press storm this weekend, although Amber and I did break up, we are still friends, remain close and love one another.”

Heard followed up that statement with one of her on on her Instagram page. She said, “Being in the public eye means having to explain yourself to so many people, so much of the time. In this case, I’d like to remain more quiet. Although we have broken up, Elon and I care deeply for one another and remain close. Thank you for the continued support, respect, and privacy during these difficult, very human times.”

Their joint statement read:

“Having read recent articles about our relationship, we would like to speak for ourselves. The distance has been really tough on our relationship, because we haven’t been able to see each other much. All relationships have their ups and downs, of course. People occasionally send out speculation, which has no basis in fact, without our knowledge, believing that that they have our best interests in mind. Sometimes, other agendas are at work. It can get a little weird… However, we would like to state directly that we have the utmost respect for one another, and it would be troubling if anyone had the impression that we thought otherwise. As a closing note, it is worth bearing in mind that events are always amplified and dramatized in a high profile relationship, whether the people involved like it or not (and we definitely don’t). The reality is that this is just a normal relationship with a giant magnifying glass applied.”

This might be the most mature breakup in history. Let this be a lesson to all those out there that want to drag their ex’s name though the mud. Both Musk and Heard seem to have their priorities straight when it comes to how to treat others. We wish these two the best of luck and hope to see them together again someday.

For anyone who has had to sit in LA traffic, it can be the must frustrating and time-consuming experience on the planet. Well, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk, is looking to change that. The enigmatic billionaire says that he is making some significant progress on his latest ambitious endeavor to create tunnels under LA that will help ease the horrible traffic in LA.

Musk got on Twitter to update everyone the status of this tunneling project. He said that he has been having “promising conversations” with the mayor of LA, Eric Garcetti. He tweeted, “Promising conversations with Mayor of LA regarding tunnel network that would carry cars, bikes, and pedestrians. Permits harder than technology.”

Last year, Musk tweeted out that “Traffic is driving me nuts. Am going to build a tunnel boring machine and just start digging…”. Of course, people didn’t quite take him seriously, until he tweeted, “It shall be called “The Boring Company”. It piqued the curiosity of Musk fans and doubters everywhere who quickly questioned whether he was being serious but Musk followed up with,  “I am actually going to do this”.

The Boring Company was then officially launched in April of this year. The goal of the company is to build as many as 30 layers of tunnels under LA that can transport cars. Musk believes that these tunnels will help to ease the traffic in LA. The Boring Company is currently working on building its own tunneling machine that will be far more powerful than any other tunnel boring machine on the market.

The company is currently being run by SpaceX engineer Steve Davis. He is working on building a tunnel that will be a demo tunnel that will be located directly under the SpaceX parking lot. In order to build the tunnel beyond the SpaceX , they would have to secure permits from the city. The Boring Company has not gotten those permits yet but will most likely obtain those soon.
